In the middle of 2015 I had the pleasure of going to Santorini for a brief holiday. While there I discovered the Santorini Brewing Company and while I didn’t get to go to the brewery, I did make a point to try all of their beers and even have a few sent home. Very much brewers in a winemakers world, much like some of the New Zealand breweries, the Santorini Brewing Company have made a point of creating fresh, unfiltered beers on the island of Santorini. The brewery began in 2011 and has endured throughout the economic turmoil Greece has suffered in the past few years.
Santorini is known for its donkeys which now mainly carry tourists up the steep cliffs from the sea to the towns. The Santorini Brewing Company have embraced this mascot and made it a part of their beer. Hopefully the donkey range can continue to carry the brewery to new heights.
They offer brewery tours (not on donkeys), the times and availability for which can be found on their website. Currently they have a 4.5/5 rating on Trip Advisor and to me it sounds like a fun place to visit. Their beers can be found on Santorini at the brewery and in restaurants, as well as mainland Greece. They seem to be pushing into USA, so maybe we will see them down in New Zealand one day!
